چکیده

Introduction: While there is a broad consensus that the central mound in Gale crater is sedimentary in origin, there remains stark disagreement about the nature of the medium that transported and deposited those sediments, particularly if the dominant agent was wind or water. Results from the Curiosity rover indicate evidence for fluvial deposition of sediments on the crater floor [1-3]. But how much of the central mound is attributable to fluvial and/or lacustrine processes? Here, we address this question by conducting a simple mass-balance approach to compare the volume of the mound with the transportation capacity of the contributing fluvial network. Mound volume: The mound volume was obtained using gridded altimetry data from the MOLA instrument and stereo-image derived topography from HRSC. We determined the difference in elevation between the mound surface and inferred basal level (ap-prox. –4.5 km elevation). The average mound height is 2.2 km, and the resulting mound volume is ~9 × 10

Mineralogy and fluvial history of the watersheds of Gale, Knobel, and Sharp craters: A regional context for the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity's exploration

A 500 km long network of valleys extends from Herschel crater to Gale, Knobel, and Sharp craters. The mineralogy and timing of fluvial activity in these watersheds provide a regional framework for deciphering the origin of sediments of Gale crater’s Mount Sharp, an exploration target for the Curiosity rover. Olivine-bearing bedrock is exposed throughout the region, and its erosion contributed t...

Modeling the thermal and physical evolution of Mount Sharp's sedimentary rocks, Gale Crater, Mars: Implications for diagenesis on the MSL Curiosity rover traverse

Gale Crater, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) landing site, contains a central mound, named Aeolis Mons (informally Mount Sharp) that preserves 5 km of sedimentary stratigraphy. Formation scenarios include (1) complete filling of Gale Crater followed by partial sediment removal or (2) building of a central deposit with morphology controlled by slope winds and only incomplete sedimentary fill. ...

Gale crater: the Mars Science Laboratory/ Curiosity Rover Landing Site

Gale crater formed from an impact on Mars *3.6 billion years ago. It hosts a central mound nearly 100 km wide and *5 km high, consisting of layered rocks with a variety of textures and spectral properties. The oldest exposed layers contain variably hydrated sulphates and smectite clay minerals, implying an aqueous origin, whereas the younger layers higher on themound are covered by amantle of d...

Mirak is one of the open-air Paleolithic sites in the Iranian Central Plateau and the only Iranian archaeological open-air site which has been excavated extensively. The site is comprised of 8 mounds, located in a dry floodplain some kilometers south of Semnan in the northern fringes of the Iranian Central Desert, aka. Dash-I Kavir. Mirak mound no. 8 was selected for the excavation. The mound i...
